The Top 5 Reasons Why I ALWAYS Vote!

Yesterday I went out and voted in the Indiana primary election. I am a semi-political person. My opinions are strong, but I only have so much ability to handle the drama of politics. I try to pay attention to the issues that candidates stand for and vote based on the leader I believe they can be. Often I have wished for more variety within the available candidates, but that doesn't keep me from the polls! Here are the top 5 reasons why I always make it a priority to cast my vote.

1. It is my duty as an American citizen.

Our country is a pretty incredible place. Yes, there are ways things could be better, but overall we have it really good! These privileges we take for granted come at a very low cost. Pay taxes, show up for jury duty if called, and vote. Our country can't function without the citizens taking an active role in the process.

2. Many people fought to give me the right to vote.

A lot of incredible women spent years trying to gain access to voting. It took 72 years for the women's suffrage movement to succeed in their struggle. I vote for all of the women who were unable to make their voices heard prior to 1920.

3. Voting allows me to shape my country.

I absolutely love knowing that actions I take help to put people into office. When they have success doing great things, I feel like I am a small part of it! I am so proud that I was a part of helping such an amazing man become the first African American president. It makes me feel like I helped to create history!

4. I like to complain.

Whether my candidate wins or not, I did my part to make my voice heard. Because of that, I feel like I have the right to complain and criticize my politicians for decisions I disagree with. The people who don't vote have made no effort to shape the country, thus they lose their right to complain in my opinion!

5. Voting sets a good example for my kids.

Obviously based on the last 4 reasons, you can tell that I put a lot of importance on the act of voting. I want my kids to grow up feeling the same way. It is liberating and empowering to realize that every single citizen of this amazing country has the ability to make their voices heard. I want my kids to feel the same way. Gavin was with Paul and me when we voted for Obama, so he feels like a part of that victory as well.

Yesterday both kids joined us at the polls. They even both got their very own sticker :)

One thing is for sure, this election will only get crazier! Do you vote regularly?
